For many years, a dream to bring the old stone Presbyterian church to life stirred the imagination of Glenn Springs residents. To that purpose, an organizational meeting of approximately 75 people was held in January, 2007. Those in attendance voted to organize, elect officers and adopt by-laws. From its genesis the Glenn Springs Preservation Society (GSPS) entered into a contract with the Spartanburg County Foundation. Donations made to the Society are held by the Foundation and are tax deductible. From this beginning, GSPS defined its mission and purpose as follows, "To identify, refurbish, protect and preserve the historical sites of Glenn Springs for use by the community." Within the year this was amended to include oral and written histories as well.
With the help of more than 200 interested citizens, the GSPS has had three kudzu pulls to clear the church property, established a web site, published a newsletter, conducted a spring driving tour of Glenn Springs, and a Christmas home tour with historical information provided by enthusiastic docents. It has begun the recording of oral histories from Glenn Springs natives. If you know someone whose memories should be part of these archives, please contact the GSPS.
Our latest project resulted in the removal of the old Allen store building, the last of the four original stores in Glenn Springs. Because of its deteriorating condition, the county ordered its demolition. With the help of owners Steve and Katherine Garrett, the GSPS disassembled the building, saving and storing all useable materials. These will be incorporated into the design and construction of a replica building on land provided by an anonymous donor.
The Glenn Springs Preservation Society has a growing membership of locals and history buffs. We are people who recognize the value of preserving the past to shape the quality of our future. Please join us in this opportunity to preserve a unique part of South Carolina's fascinating history!
